MUST WATCH PRISON MOVIE - SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION (1994) - Review by Kumaran Shanmugam.

In 1947, Andy a successful banker is convicted to life imprisonment for murdering his wife and her lover, an offense he had not committed. He is imprisoned in Shawshank State Penitentiary where he befriends Red a smuggler serving life imprisonment. Red presents him with a knife. Andy is constantly tormented and physically abused by a group of prisoners led by their leader Bogs.

Andy being an intelligent banker helps the warden and prison employees to manage their money by laundering in the name of a fictional person Randal Stephen. Andy is rewarded for his financial assistance to prison employees by being posted in the soft job as a library assistant.

Andy comes to know from a new prison inmate about the real culprit who killed his wife and her lover. Andy conveys the information to the prison warden who ignores it. An enraged Andy threatens to reveal the money laundering but is punished by solitary confinement. He is later released tells Red about his dream of living in Red dismisses Andy's dream as unrealistic.

During roll call the next day Andy is found missing. The warden finds a secret tunnel leading to the drainage pipe from where was Andy had escaped. Andy withdraws the laundered money from the banks under his alias Randall Stephen. He submits all the incriminating documents to a local newspaper. The prison captain is arrested and the warden commits suicide in order to avoid arrest. After 40 years Red is released on parole. He crosses the border to Mexico to meet Andy and the two friends are happily reunited.
